New York, March 4, IRNA -
After three years of making obstacles by the US government on
issuing a visa for Iranian delegation to attend women meeting at the
United Nationsan, an Iranian 5-member delegation has managed to attend
the meeting this year.
The 2-week meeting with the aim of discussing women rights in
different fields started its work last Monday here at the UN
headquarters.
Head of Iran?s delegation to the 53rd UN meeting of ?Women Status
Commission" Elham Aminzadeh, who is advisor to the Foreign Minister in
women affairs, said the commission is a sub-body of the UN Economic
and Social Council which approved in the year of 1946 to create a
temporary commission on women affairs with its headquarter in Vienna.
She added the commission has 45 members who are chosen upon
geographical regions and each year, they choose a topic for discussion
and consultation.
Aminzadeh said the topic for this year meeting is cooperation and
joint responsibility of men and women in dealing with AIDS.
She added that Iranian scientists have succeeded to produce medicins
for treatment of AIDS and she will present the issue on Wednesday when
she delivers Iran?s national report .
Aminzadeh went on to say, "In our national report, we also discuss the
necessity of defending and supporting women in Gaza Strip."
Head of Iran?s delegation to the meeting said she hopes a resolution
by Group 77 concerning situation of women in Gaza can be approved in
the commission and condemn Israeli crimes in Gaza.
