Aussie Davis Cup team arrives in Bangkok
The Australian Davis Cup squad has arrived in Bangkok to prepare for their
Asia/Oceania group one match against Thailand starting on Friday.
Lleyton Hewitt heads a team also featuring Chris Guccione, Carsten Ball and Brydan
Klein as the Australians begin the task of attempting to re-join the world group.
Australia comfortably accounted for Thailand 5-0 in Townsville last year but the
Thais are expected to be a tougher prospect at the 1500-seat National Tennis
Development Centre in Nonthaburi, Bangkok.
"It is important we start the tie well," Australian captain John Fitzgerald said.
"Davis Cup history is riddled with the wreckage of favourites playing away from home
who let an early rubber slip, only to see the home side harness that momentum all
the way to an upset."
Thailand are led by world No.159 Danai Udomchoke and doubles twins Sonchat and
Sanchai Ratiwatana with 18-year-old Kittiphong Wachiramanowong named as the fourth
player.
The winner of this tie will advance to the next round of Asia/Oceania group one and
meet the winner of the Chinese Taipei- India in May for a berth in a World Group
play-off in September.
