Five injured in Harbour Bridge crash
Five people have been injured, one critically, in a head-on collision that reduced
traffic to a crawl on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Motorists were urged to avoid the bridge after a multi-car pileup closed all but one
lane of traffic on the major motorway.
The collision involving five vehicles happened about 5.15pm (AEDT) on Sunday, about
150 metres north of the toll booths at the southern end of the bridge, police said.
An NRMA CareFlight helicopter landed at nearby Observatory Hill where two doctors
onboard rushed to treat a 34-year-old man in critical condition.
He was trapped in his vehicle for at least 45 minutes with multiple injuries while
emergency crews worked to free him.
The man suffered serious injuries to his chest, abdomen and pelvis and a fracture to
his left arm, a CareFlight spokesman told AAP.
He was rushed by ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.
Four others were transported to hospital with minor injuries, a NSW Ambulance
spokesman said.
Immediately following the crash, all but one southbound lane was closed on the
bridge, with police warning motorists to expect major delays.
The police said all lanes on the bridge were re-opened around 6.30pm with heavy
traffic on the bridge and Harbour Tunnel expected to subside.
