(LEAD) ruling party lawmaker-assault

SEOUL, Feb. 27 (Yonhap) -- A female lawmaker with the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) was assaulted by a handful of protesters at the National Assembly Friday and underwent emergency treatment at an Assembly clinic, police officials and aides said.

A group of about six women suddenly approached Chun Yu-ok on her way to the exit
of the Assembly building around noon and punched her in the face and other parts
of her body, according to investigators at the Yeongdeungpo police station in
southwestern Seoul.
"The attackers, who claimed they belong to a left-leaning civic activist group,
also violently dragged Chun by the hair before fleeing," an aide said.
Police officials said that the attackers were part of a group of some 40 people
protesting Chun's proposal to revise the review process for compensation paid to
those who suffered during past pro-democracy movements.
Chun said Thursday that she plans to propose a bill that would allow a governing
committee to review compensation cases approved under the past two liberal
administrations.
The aide said Chun was rushed to an Assembly clinic for emergency treatment,
where doctors recommended that she be admitted to a general hospital.
Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Kim Hyung-o asked the police to conduct a
thorough investigation into the incident, vowing not to let any attacks on
lawmakers go unpunished.
