Muscat to play on, says Victory coach
Melbourne Victory captain Kevin Muscat is treating the A-League grand final as his last game but coach Ernie Merrick has other ideas.
The 35-year-old defensive hard man has put off discussions about his future until after Saturday night's championship decider against Adelaide United at Telstra Dome.
But, given his form this season and the prospect of leading the Victory into the
2010 Asian Champions League, there is every reason to believe he will continue.
Muscat is one of just two Melbourne players, along with fellow defensive stalwart
Rody Vargas, to have played every minute of every Melbourne game this season.
Merrick has little doubt his consistent standard of performance is good enough to
warrant a minimum of one more season.
"I'm almost certain that Kevin will rejoin us and sign at least for another year, I
certainly don't think it's his last game," the coach said on Friday.
But despite Merrick's promptings, Muscat refused to give anything away.
"Ernie's tried to speak to me about it a number of times over the last month, it's
the last thing on my mind, it honestly is, that's just the reality," Muscat said.
"I've got quite a few other things I want to exert my energy into before I start
thinking about that."
But Muscat admitted the possibility that his distinguished career could be about to
end added to his incentive to lead Melbourne to a second title.
"I've got to the stage a little while ago where I started treating every game as my
last game," Muscat said.
"I'm not making a statement, I'm just saying at my age you've got to treat every
game as your last game and I've used that as motivation."
