'Kilometre Zero' landmark to be placed at Hoan Kiem Lake
Hanoi (VNA) - A landmark to designate "Kilometre Zero (Km) " is planned for unveiling at the capital city's Hoan Kiem Lake this year, according to Nguyen Trong Tuan of the national steering committee for the 1,000 th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.
Scientists and city officials are currently discussing design details and the exact
location for the landmark, says Tuan.
The decision to create the Km0 landmark was initiated by Professor Ha Dinh Duc in a
submission to the official body in charge of planning for the anniversary.
It is necessary to have a landmark at Km0 to mark the start of every road in the
city due to Hanoi 's recent expansion to three times its previous size,
according to Duc.
"Many people, including myself, already consider Hoan Kiem Lake as the Km0
landmark, but a more specific landmark will be much more meaningful," says Nguyen
Van Lac from Hanoi .
All the scientists and local officials who are part of the discussion have agreed to
set up the landmark for Km0 at Hoan Kiem Lake, however no final decision for its
design and exact location have been made, says Tuan.
There is anticipation that the landmark will be a 3m tall cylinder made of precious
stone covering an area of 4-6sq.m. It would be located at the southern corner of the
lake.
Most countries in the world mark Km0 at the capital's central post office, from
where posts and letters are distributed throughout the country. It is considered an
unwritten law, according to professor Le Van Lan.
Lan and professor Vu Khieu believed the Km0 landmark should be a simple design and
of a small size but easy to notice.
Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources officials and the municipal Department
of Planning and Architecture need to carefully design this historic, cultural and
geographic landmark to ensure Hoan Kiem Lake is not adversely affected, says
Tuan.
Sometime after March a design contest will be announced for the Km0 landmark. Public
opinion will help decide the final design, says Duc.-Enditem
