Thai PM enters Government House, passes through protesters without incident
BANGKOK, Feb 25 (TNA) - Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Wednesday morning entered Government House passing through ranks of United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protesters who had surrounded the compound, without incident.
The UDD, the so-called Red Shirt group supporting ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, wants to increase the pressure on the government to emphasise its four-point list of demands. They surrounded Government House on Tuesday and vowed to prolong the protest until their demands were met.
Police and army units were deployed both inside and adjacent to Government House to maintain peace and order as thousands of red-shirted protesters gathered outside the entrances.
The prime minister arrived at Government House at 7.30am for an early meeting before leaving for NBT, the Public Relations Department-related broadcast facility, to preside over a ceremony marking the 79th year of Thai broadcast radio at 9am.
The prime minister's motorcade did not use the main entrance as usual but used gate number seven to enter and exit Government House.
A score of security forces had prepared the way before Mr. Abhisit arrived and departed as the number of the protesters were not dense, while on the stage set up near the compound, the UDD leaders continued their activities.
Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban thanked the protesters for not breaking the law and thanked the security officials who applied patient in maintaining peace and order.
The Red Shirt protesters are demanding that the prime minister dissolve the House of Representatives in order to call a general election, bring those who had occupied Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports as well as Government House to justice, dismiss Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya and amend the Constitution according to their requirements.
They planned to sent smaller group to the Foriegn Ministry to press ahead their demand. (TNA)
