Police say headless corpse may be Italian tourist

BANGKOK, Feb 24 (TNA) - Thai forensic experts confirmed that a severed head found dangling beneath Bangkok’s Rama VIII Bridge on Sunday belonged to the headless corpse found floating in the Chao Phraya River a day later, and that it would appear the man had committed suicide rather than being murdered, according to a senior police officer.

The dead man is believed to be an Italian tourist who entered the country this month, according to his visual appearance of the dead man's face.

Pol. Gen. Jongrak Juthanont, deputy national police chief, said that an autopsy by forensic experts at Siriraj Hospital, showed that the corpse and the severed head matched and it was believed that the man might have died from hanging himself and not by murder, as earlier suspected.

Gen. Jongrak added that according to the initial investigation, the dead man might have committed suicide by hanging himself rather than being murdered, as the wounds found at the neck were not from sharp blades but were tattered like in a ripping.

The man's head was believed to have been torn away from the body due to the weight of the man when he hanged himself from the bridge railing.

According to the records on crimes committed by international crime syndicates in Thailand, there has never been a similar murder case like this in the kingdom, he said.

The person may have committed suicide because he was upset for an unknown reason, the deputy police chief said.

At the roadway level railing, police also discovered a message written in correction fluid, "I want but I cannot...I came to Bangkok to be you" written in English by a non-native English speaker.

Gen. Jongrak added that according to the information from the Immigration Police Bureau, the dead man looked similar to an Italian tourist named Gaeta Giovani who entered Thailand on February 18 and registered at Rex Hotel in Bangkok’s commercial Sukhumvit area.

The hotel said it had lost contact with the guest.

"The Italian tourist neither checked out from the hotel nor left the kingdom," Gen. Jongrak said. "Police suspected that they might be the same person as the dead man was wearing Italian-brand clothes."

The deputy national police chief appealed to anyone who might know the Italian national to still be alive, to contact police as soon as possible with their information.

He said police investigators will wait for a further 30 days, if no further evidence arose indicating it was a murder case or other information, the police will conclude the case was a matter of suicide. (TNA)
