POLICE SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON ENFORCEMENT - FOMCA

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- Traffic congestion in the city during peak
hours can be minimised by using smart traffic lights, the Federation of
Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) said.

The lights would also free traffic police to concentrate on enforcing rules
and regulations, Fomca secretary-general Muhammad Shaani Abdullah said, adding
that police could be more productive in ensuring that motorists adhere to rules
and avoid queue jumping rather than guiding motorists, he added.

"It was often the queue jumping, crossing double line and speeding that
caused traffic slow down and congestions," he said told Bernama.

Muhammad said the lights could easily be synchronised to ensure a smoother
flow of traffic.

On the government's move to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera
to nab speeding motorists or reckless drivers, Muhammad said, this would not be
effective if it was not monitored closely.

"This is nothing new, it had been done before and the results were not
encouraging," he added.
