PENANG TOPS UNIDO`S 2009 INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT REPORT

NEW DELHI, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- A United Nations agency report has identified
Penang as one of the 10 dynamic industrial cluster locations in the world to
have demonstrated a successful manufacturing experience among developing
economies.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation's (UNIDO) Industrial
Development Report 2009, had rated Penang, along with Buenos Aries, Southeastern
Brazil, Phnom Penh, Los Lagos (Chile), Qiaotou, (China), Chennai, Jakarta,
Vientiane and Otigba in Nigeria, as the leading locations.

The agency's survey conducted through 2000 to 2006, disclosed the 10 dynamic
industrial locations in developing economies, which created conducive
investment environment, generated employment and was able to compete in the
international market.

Some of the indicators that placed Penang as a robust location were,
excellent basic infrastructure, strong cluster networks between firms and
intermediary agencies such as the Penang Development Corportation (PDC) and the
Free Trade Association of Penang.

In addition, compliance with environmental standards, upgrading of
production from low level to high value added activities and the island's open
system framework that has enabled movement of human capital were other salient
factors.

"The attractive financial incentives and excellent basic infrastructure
helped attract giant American, Japanese and European firms. The relocation of
these flagship firms helped stimulate the development of local suppliers," said
the report, released in Delhi.

Between 2000 and 2006, developing countries gained a world market share in
both simple (resource-based and low technology) and complex (medium and
high-technology) manufacturers.

"Manufacturer exports from all developing regions, except Latin America,
grew faster than the world average and faster than exports, from developed
countries.

"South Asia was the fastest growing region, reflecting India's rapid
export growth," revealed the report.
