McLellan wants national record
Olympic Games silver medallist Sally McLellan has vowed to break the national 100m record after a sizzling performance in her return to the Australian athletics circuit.
McLellan, who claimed silver in the 100m hurdles in Beijing, ran her 100m flat heat
in 11.26s at the Queensland titles on Saturday.
It was her best time in 18 months and she backed up to win the final at the
Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre comfortably in 11.35s.
On a Brisbane track which slowed due to a downpour between the two races, McLellan
led home South Australian Alicia Wrench-Doody and Darwin's Crystal Attenborough by
three metres.
The Gold Coaster, who has just returned home from a successful stint competing in
the United States, has her eyes on Melinda Gainsford-Taylor's national record of
11.12s set back in 1994.
McLellan was provoked into competing in the Queensland meet by coach Sharon Hannan
talking up rising teenager Melissa Breen, who recently ran a personal best of
11.33s.
Asked about the challenge to hold off Breen, McLellan said: "One of us will break
the Australian record come (next month's) national titles."
Saturday's performance was just .12 off McLellan's personal best of 11.14, set in
the 2007 world titles in Osaka.
Fellow Olympian Patrick Johnson was nipped on the line in the men's 100m final with
Brisbane's Matt Davies (10.45) prevailing in a photo finish.
