Hawks edge out Demons by 3 points
Reigning premiers Hawthorn stormed home on the back of a five-goal haul from Jarryd Roughead to hand last year's wooden spooners Melbourne an agonising three-point NAB Cup defeat in Launceston on Saturday.
The Hawks kicked the only six goals of the final term, with Roughead kicking the
last with five seconds left in the match as Hawthorn won 0.11.3 (69) to 1.8.9 (66).
After going win-less through last year's pre-season to herald a dreadful 2008, the
Demons had looked on track to start their 2009 campaign in much better fashion.
They led by 33 points at the last change, but were outscored 6.1 to just one behind
in the final term.
Youngsters Jarryd Morton and Cameron Stokes both scored from stunning snaps early in
the last quarter, after Roughead had kicked the opening goal of the term.
The big forward, in the absence of regular attacking partner Lance Franklin, had
earlier kept his side in the game, kicking three goals from as many kicks in the
first quarter, all from tight angles.
Melbourne were the much better side in general play early, but scored 4.5 to 4.0 in
the first quarter to lead by only five points, with the margin still the same at
halftime.
But the Demons looked to have broken the game open when they kicked the only four
goals of the third quarter, the last of those a nine-pointer to Clint Bartram which
set up their 33-point lead.
Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell was his normal prolific self, racking up touches in
the midfield, as did youngster Travis Tuck.
Despite the loss, there were some good signs for Melbourne.
Brock McLean and Brad Green, who was close to leaving the club in the off-season,
were both very good in the midfield, while Matthew Bate shone up forward with four
goals.
Rookie-listed ruckman Jake Spencer and 19-year-old midfielder Kyle Cheney, yet to
play a premiership season game, were both impressive.
Both sides had some injury concerns, as well as reports.
The Hawks lost premiership players Chance Bateman (ankle) and Michael Osborne (leg)
to injury by halftime.
Melbourne captain James McDonald limped off in the second quarter, after exciting
young forward Austin Wonaeamirri (hamstring) went off in the first.
Both sides had a player reported in the first quarter - Melbourne's Paul Johnson for
a clash with Mitchell and the Hawks' Clinton Young for crashing into Aaron Davey in
a marking contest.
