Roar coach prepared to win ugly

Don't expect much "beautiful football" in the A-League preliminary final.
Adelaide United appear likely to retreat into the ugly but effective play that took
them most of the way through the Asian Champions League, and Queensland are so set
on reaching Asia themselves that coach Frank Farina said he was quite happy to win
by any means possible.
"In tomorrow's game, just in tomorrow's game, I don't mind if we play absolutely
crap and win," Farina said on Friday.
"We want to win the grand final as well but to win this one it's a big prize for
both teams - this game has as much significance as the grand final for us."
The concept of winning ugly has been a familiar one to both clubs this season.
Adelaide had to learn how to do so in order to make an impression in Asia, and
managed to, building a limited game plan around the defensive stability of
centre-half Sasa Ognenovski and the ability of a diverse attack to nick the odd
goal, often from a set piece.
"(Robert) Cornthwaite and Sasa are big boys and we'll have to be wary of that
tomorrow," said Roar goalkeeper Liam Reddy.
"We'll go through a video session tonight and have a look at what they do, we'll be
very wary of it and hopefully we can deal with it."
Farina watched the early versions of Queensland - then coached by Miron Bleiberg -
and reasoned that his club would need steel as well as style in order to make a
lasting impact.
In general terms, Farina thinks good, attacking football is necessary to further the
growth of the game in Australia, but it seems the former Australian mentor is
willing to make an exception in this case.
"No team wants to be playing attractive football and losing games," Farina said.
"The argument with Queensland early on was that they played great entertaining
football but in the first two years we didn't make the play-offs.
"From a selfish point of view I'd prefer to be playing unattractive football and
winning games, but in terms of the A-League it definitely is important that teams
play good football."
