PM: Cabinet meeting not related to protesters' planned rally
BANGKOK, Feb 19 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday refuted media assumptions the relocation of next week’s cabinet meeting to the seaside resort of Hua Hin was to avoid confrontation as the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) planned to gather at Government House in Bangkok.
The Prime Minister said the Cabinet would inspect preparations for the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, scheduled for Hua Hin from February 27 to March 1.
The premier said officials would maintain security at Government House as usual. So far, he had been informed UDD protesters would not break into the Government House compound or block entrances.
The UDD had the right to stage protests as long as the group complied with the law, Mr. Abhisit said.
The UDD demonstrators planned to stage a new rally next Tuesday to pressure the Democrat-led coalition government's Cabinet on its four-point list of demands.
Their demands call for the coalition government to take legal action against the UDD rivals the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), sack Foreign Affairs Minister Kasit Piromya and to either amend the present Constitution or dissolve the current House of Representatives. (TNA)
