Bangladesh vows to combat cross-border activities

Dhaka, Feb 17 (PTI) Acknowledging that its porous
frontier with India makes it difficult to stop cross-border
infiltration, Bangladesh, nevertheless, said Tuesday that it
will do everything in its capacity to deal with the problem.

Citing the case of the Mexico-US border, Bangladesh
Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said that despite having all modern
mechanisms in their possession, the two countries were unable
to stop people from crossing over.

"We share a huge border, a very long border with India
and think about Mexico and the US. They have all these modern
mechanisms, they have everything - still can they stop people
from going from one side to the other?

"Here also it could happen, it happens that part of the
household is on that side, may be the other part in on the
other side, so there are crossings all the time," Moni told
private Indian channel CNN-IBN.

The Bangladesh Foreign Minister also vowed to do
everything possible to tackle cross-border activities.

"This government will do everything that is possible and
necessary to combat that, to combat those forces within our
national borders through our national mechanisms and at the
same time we would like to cooperate with our neighbours so
that the spillover effect is not there or there are no
cross-border activities.

"But, if we want lasting peace in this region, then we
must cooperate with all our neighbours," Moni said. PTI
