Cashew exporters face tough times

Hanoi (VNA) - The value of cashew export is expected to decline this year due to effects from the global financial crisis.

The country will export 170,000 tonnes of cashews, worth 900 million USD, in 2009,
16 percent lower in value than in 2008, said Le Xuan, head of the Department of
Farming, Forest and Fisheries Processing and Salt Industry under the Ministry of
Agricultural and Rural Development.

In the first month of this year, cashew exporters shipped an estimated 12,000
tonnes, earning 55 million USD, said the department. Those figures were down 14.3
percent in volume and 19 percent in value compared to December 2008.

The export price also fell by 5 percent to 4,583 USD per tonnes.

The Viet Nam Cashew Association was afraid that all domestic cashew exporters would
see huge losses this year.

Nguyen Thai Hoc, deputy chairman of the association, said exporters still have
unsold stocks from 2008. The exporters have signed contracts to export 40-50 percent
of total processed cashew output, but there were few long-term contracts.

Exports to the US , China and Europe are all falling due to effects of the
global financial crisis, the association said.

Meanwhile, Hoc said, the price paid by processor for raw cashews is expected to
continue at a high level this year.

To overcome these difficulties, he said, the cashew industry would discourage
exports of raw cashew, and undertake new trade promotion efforts, searching for new
export markets and improving competitive capacity.

The industry would pay greater attention to developing sources of raw cashews,
including import sources, and work to control the quality of raw materials.

The association has called for Government support in the form of loans to cashew
processors and growers to

solve difficulties in production and export this year.

In a petition to the Prime Minister, the association has urged banks to lend 6.7
trillion VND (375 million USD) to farmers and processors.

Vietnam has 220 cashew processors with a total capacity of 600,000-700,000
tonnes per year, the association said. The country exports to 78 markets,
including Russia , the US , Japan , Germany , Australia , the UK , the EU
and China.-Enditem
