Yemen, WB discuss implementing BEDP annual review

SANA'A, Feb.16 (Saba) - Yemen and World Bank discussed here on Monday the educational programs and activities related to carrying out the annual review of the Basic Education Department Program (BEDP) next May 2009.

During his meeting with the WB's team in charge of the reviewing the donor-funded
BEDP, Deputy Education Minister Abdullah al-Hamedi reviewed the ministry's efforts
for improving its educational activities and programs and their impact on the
education quality and outcomes.

The meeting emphasized the necessity of availing from the successful programs when
setting up the educational activities and plans for this year as well as getting
advantage from the donors' notes in this regard.

Penal court grants last chance to accused of spying to present arguments

SANA'A, Feb. 16 (Saba)- Sana'a Specialized Primary Penal Courts decided granting
advocates of accused on espionage for Israel a last chance to defend themselves and
responding to the claim of the advocate during next Monday hearing.
The prosecutor demanded in the court session held on Monday delaying the case for
final proceeding. The court's session was chaired by Judge Muhsen Alwan.
The prosecution accuses both Abdullah al-Haidari, 25, Emad Arraimi, 23 and Ali
al-Ezi, 24 of charges of espionage with Israeli government and spreading falsified
information under the name of Islamic Jihad Organization.
This information includes acknowledgment of the organization in carrying out
explosions against governmental and foreign interests in Hadramout and Sana'a. The
accusations include threats of carrying out other explosions against governmental
and foreign interests in Yemen.
The accusation decision includes forging state documents and getting a car of 2005
model from a car- renting company illegally.

Al-Jawfi receives WB education team

SANA'A, Feb. 16 (Saba)- Minister of Education Abdul-Salam al-Jawfi discussed on
Monday with the World Bank team of improving primary education project, headed by
Aisha Fuda, and discussed with them improvement phases of the project and its
achievements since its establishment.
The meeting dealt with expanding the project and putting solutions and remedies for
difficulties facing the project work.
The minister affirmed that the project is considered the first in the ministry's
programmes for its visible changes in the educational process either with respect to
infrastructure or improving inputs and outputs of education.
He reviewed achievements of school map in finding out an educational data base in
addition to providing donors with educational data.

Al-Lawzi meets with AFP regional Bureau Chief

SANA'A, Feb. 16 (Saba) - Minister of Information Hassan al-Lawzi met on Monday with
the regional Bureau Chief of Agence France-Presse (AFP) Christian Chaise who arrived
in Yemen to report on preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections
scheduled for April 27.
At the meeting, al-Lawzi affirmed the poll would be held on time according to the
constitution. Al-Lawzi also highlighted the security situation in Yemen hailing
achievements the security forces have made cracking down terrorists.
He revealed an intellectual and political plan is under way to overcome all
challenges.
The minister brought up policies to deal with terrorists through dialogue and
rehabilitating them to include them in the Yemeni society.
Chaise was introduced to progress the domestic media made and modernization in
legislations to organize visual, audible and electronic media.
The government will allow more channels in the future al-Lawzi said affirming the
discussion of proposed amendments to the journalism law has been suspended due to
political congestion.

Conference on bettering business doing in Yemen to be opened on Tuesday

SANA'A, Feb. 16 (Saba)-Ministry of Industry and Trade is organizing on Tuesday a
conference on bettering investment and business environment in the country in
cooperation with the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
The conference would discuss results of 2009 Doing Business Report about Yemen and
future steps that Yemen has to take to achieve more progress in this regard, the
organizers said.
Representatives of government bodies and private sectors as well as IFC experts and
representatives of donor countries will tale part in the two-day conference.
It is worth mentioning that Yemen has achieved a lot of measures in fields of
reforming the commercial activity and doing business.

Yemen, Oman hold official talks in Sana'a

SANA'A, Feb. 16 (Saba)- Yemen and Oman held on Monday official talks in Sana'a
co-chaired by the Chairman of Shoura Council Abdul-Aziz Abdul Ghandi and Omani state
chairman Yahya al-Monthari.
During the talks, the two officials affirmed strength of the neighboring and
brotherly Yemeni-Omani relationship under the leadership of President Ali Abdullah
Saleh and Sultan of Oman Qaboos Bin Said Al-Said.
Abdul-Ghani highlighted position of Oman to support accession of Yemen into the
several Gulf corporations, wishing Yemen to get the full membership in the GCC.
He pointed out to the coming meeting of the GCC foreign ministers in Muscat by the
end of this month, praising assistance offered by Oman to help relief efforts of the
Yemeni government in Hadramout, which was hit by flood last October, 2008.
He also indicated to the issues of terror and piracy, saying that the Yemen concerns
with stability and security in Somalia as well.
Abdul-Ghani said that Yemen is working with the international community to combat
terror that affects the security and economy of the world.
Regarding the Palestine, the chairman of Shoura council renewed stance of Yemen to
support the Palestinian people and importance of unity of all Palestinian factions
to face their enemy.
He pointed out to the Yemeni initiative to resume of the dialogue between all
Palestinian factions under regional sponsorship.
For his part, the Omani official called on bodies in both countries to cooperate to
enhance relations between the two countries, expressing happiness of Oman to see
Yemen in several GCC institutions, voicing support of his country to access Yemen to
the GCC.
The Omani official also said that Yemen and Oman have similar positions over issues
of combating terror and piracy as well as Palestinian issue.
At the end of the talk, both sides signed a memorandum of understating of
cooperation between the two councils.

Yemen, AI discuss women condition in Yemen

SANA'A, Feb. 16 (Saba) - Yemen and Amnesty International (AI) discussed here on
Monday several issues related to women as well as their participation in the
development process.
Human Rights Minister Huda al-Ban reviewed with a delegation from AI, Yemen's
efforts in collaboration with the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the
concerned international organizations to spread the social awareness of the women's
constitutional and lawful rights in different areas.
The Minister pointed out the roles of ministry in field of receiving complaints
related to women's rights violations and its endeavors towards woman issues,
particularly in girl education and the obstacles assist in expanding the education
gender gap.
Al-Ban called on all governmental and non-governmental bodies to work on promoting
Yemeni woman's role in different areas.

Sentence against Yemeni Jew's killer next March

SANA'A, Feb. 16 (Saba)- Amran Specialized Penal Court has named 02 March for
announcing the verdict in the case of the killer of Masha al-Nahari, a Yemeni Jew.
In the hearing session, held on Monday under the chairmanship of Abdul-Bari Uqbah,
the prosecutor presented a report on mental and psychological condition of the
accused Abdul-Aziz al-Abdi when he committed the crime. The report indicated that
the killer suffer mental disorder.
The advocate of the accused presented medical reports on psychological and mental
conditions of the killer. These reports indicate that al-Abdi suffers mental and
psychological disturbances.

Meanwhile, the advocate of the victim said these reports must not be approved
because those who did them did not testify before the court.
The court then listened to final proceedings by the prosecutors and lawyer of the
victim. All of them affirmed completing their arguments in this issue.
