Vietnam supports int'l community's assistance to Somalia

New York (VNA) - The Vietnamese representative to the United Nations Security
Council has called on the international community to increase their assistance to
Somalia in order to strengthen the peace-keeping activities in the African
country.
Addressing the council's consultation session on Somalia and the operation of the
African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) held on Feb. 12, Ambassador Le Luong Minh
expressed his concern about the recent situation in Somalia , particularly the
continuation of piracy and armed attacks targeting civilians and the peace-keeping
force.

He urged relevant parties in Somalia to stop violence and exert efforts to
accelerate the negotiation process for the country's development.

Ambassador Minh applauded the recent positive political progress in Somalia ,
including the election of Sharif Ahmed as Somalia 's President.

However, he stressed that to gain a comprehensive solution for the Somalia issue,
it is necessary to further regional cooperation activities, including the assistance
and coordination of the African Union and Somalia 's neighbouring
countries.-Enditem
