Gov't debt rises to 846.69 tril. yen with new bond issue

TOKYO, Feb. 10 Kyodo - The outstanding balance of central government debt stood at 846.69 trillion yen as the end of 2008, up 3.41 trillion yen from three months earlier, the Finance Ministry said Tuesday.

Although the state debt had declined after hitting an all-time high of 849.24
trillion yen as of March 31, 2008, it rebounded in the latest tally as the
government issued new bonds to finance the first supplementary budget for the
current fiscal year to implement economic stimulus measures.
Per capita debt came to about 6.63 million yen as of Dec. 31, compared with
about 6.60 million yen from Sept. 30.
The balance broke down to 681.57 trillion yen for government bonds, up 1.31
trillion yen from September, 56.25 trillion yen for borrowing, up 0.21 trillion
yen, and 108.88 trillion yen for financing bills, up 1.89 trillion yen.
General government bonds accounted for 545.45 trillion yen of outstanding
government bonds, up 3.81 trillion yen from September.
