800 Thai soldiers to assist UNAMID in Sudan
BANGKOK, Feb 10 (TNA) - An 800-strong Thai military contingent will leave for southern Darfur in Sudan, most likely in June or July this year for assignment to help in the joint African Union/United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) peacekeeping mission, a spokesman of the Thai Armed Forces said Tuesday.
The decision to dispatch the Thai troops to Darfur was made during a meeting of military commanders earlier in the day, chaired by Supreme Commander Gen. Songkitti Jaggabatara.
Five months ago Thailand agreed to dispatch military assistance to the Sudan crisis zone, to which the Sudanese government warmly responded on September 18, he said.
The Thai-Darfur Task Force 980 unit will be responsible for building and improving military camps in Mukhjar and Um-Dukhum towns, patrolling and protecting peacekeeping convoys during an assignment there which would last six months.
All expenses incurred by the Thai soldiers will be shouldered by the UN, said the spokesman. (TNA)
