Katherine Hull eyes Webb's golf crown
Australia's latest golf star Katherine Hull was in awe on Tuesday as she
contemplated back-to-back victories in a bid to ramp up her claim to inherit Karrie
Webb's long-held crown.
Hull crushed a talented field to win the ANZ Ladies Masters at the resort-style
Royal Pines on Sunday - but her first look at Metropolitan, the venue for this
week's Australian Open, left her star-struck.
"I would say it is the best golf course I've ever played in Australia," Hull said.
"I'm really impressed with the condition of it. The layout is fantastic, every hole
has its own character.
"The greens are pure, I am really looking forward to the tournament. I have tried to
pick one on the US schedule that would match this one but it is by far the best I
have played in Australia."
Hull said she would have to make some adjustment to the Melbourne sandbelt layout
but in the end planned to continue to play as simply as possible.
"There is a difference. You work Tuesday and Wednesday getting to the greens and
spending more time on your short game. You have to make sure that your speed is spot
on come Thursday.
"But when it is all said and done it is golf, not rocket science. You keep it simple
and do the best you can."
Hull has rocketed six spots to No.20 in the world and puts her improvement down to
physical and mental changes.
"My mindset is a little bit different," she said. "One of the key things is that I
practise more like I play.
"The transition from the range and the short game area to the golf course is a lot
easier.
"When I am out on the golf course I don't dwell on past shots as much as I used to.
"A lot of that has to do with my caddie John (Powell). He is quick to get into my
face and get me to recite a Bible verse or talk about something else.
"My mental game has changed a lot in the past two years."
Hull said putting would be the key to contending with the speedy greens a new
challenge.
"They are pure, I love them. They are a lot quicker than we play up in Queensland -
you get it on line and they will go in."
Hull has refused to put extra pressure on herself this week following her
comprehensive five shot win at the weekend.
"I try not to expect too much," she said. "Obviously the goal is to win.
"There is a lot that goes into winning golf tournaments and after last week I have
some confidence but I am not going to stand here and say I am going to win.
"There is a ton of good players in this field capable of shooting four good scores
on such a great golf course."
