Megawati Soekarnoputri To Meet South Korean President
SEOUL, May 30 (Antara) - Indonesia's fifth president Megawati Soekarnoputri is scheduled to hold a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the Blue House, Seoul, on Monday, as part of a courtesy visit to discuss two key issues.
Herman Heri, a senior politician of PDI Perjuangan, a party led by Soekarnoputri, revealed that one of the topics to be discussed is cooperation opportunities between both countries.
"Soekarnoputri is invited to the Blue House where she will share ideas of cooperation with South Korea under the government of President Moon," Heri noted.
Since being elected on May 10, 2017, President Moon has not met any member of the government or national figures of Indonesia. The meeting with Soekarnoputri is Moon's first encounter with an Indonesian figure.
Soekarnoputri's keenness to campaign for peace is the second aspect to be discussed.
As a leader welcomed by both North and South Korea, Soekarnoputri holds an important position in accelerating the reunification of both countries.
After meeting President Moon, Soekarnoputri will depart for Jeju Island to attend the 12th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity.
The forum will also be attended by thousands of politicians, academia, activists, and journalists from 70 countries, including former president of the US Al Gore, Portugal former president Anibal Cavaco Silva, and Mongolian political figure Punsalmaagin Ochirbat.
The participants will discuss efforts to improve cooperation in the fields of politics, economy, security, and climate change, as well as other regional issues.
Several high-ranking Korean officials will participate in the forum that is viewed as being important in formulating foreign and security policies of both conflicting Korean countries.
To this end, the South Korean president has dispatched Moon Chung-in, an advisor to the president of the unification of two Korean countries, to attend the forum.
