PM attributes socio-economic stability to anti-corruption efforts

Hanoi (VNA) - The fight against corruption contributed to ensuring macro-economic
growth, reining in inflation and stabilising social welfare in 2008, according to
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

The government leader, who is also head of the Anti-Corruption Central Steering
Committee, made the remark while chairing the ninth session of the committee in
Hanoi on Feb. 8.
The PM affirmed that last year, breakthroughs were made in the fight, helping
reduce and prevent corruption in a number of fields.

He pointed to the need to intensify prevention, defining it as the major and leading
duty in combating corruption effectively this year.

To this end, he said relevant agencies should quickly create new laws and legal
documents to further promote transparency and openness in the management and
execution in public works, including land use, State corporations' investment and
spending, and tax.

He urged branches, sectors and localities to further improve the efficiency of
inspections, auditing, and surveillance to make the fight against corruption
fruitful.

While stressing the necessity to boost close cooperation between policemen,
procurators and judicial officials to ensure corrupt cases are judged in line with
law, PM Dung urged relevant agencies to accelerate judiciary reforms, establish a
complete appraisal agency, and supplement legal regulations regarding the protection
of those reporting corruption.

Members of the Anti-Corruption Central Steering Committee agreed that "corruption
prevention is an urgent and long run task that must be undertaken continuously,
resolutely and persistently."-Enditem
