JUDO - INDONESIAN ATHLETES TO TRAIN IN KOREA AHEAD SEAG
Jakarta, Apr 4 (Antara) - Indonesian judokas will train in South Korea for a month ahead of the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG), a biennial regional multi-sport event, scheduled on Aug 19-31 in Malaysia, coach Ni Made Suyudani stated here, Sunday.
"The training program, which has been approved by the country's sports taskforce (Satlak Prima), is expected to help us achieve our target for this year's Sea Games," Suyudani noted while adding that around six to eight athletes will attend the training camp.
However, the association has selected only six athletes, including Syaiful Rahardjo, Ihsan Afriadi, Kadek Anny Pandini, and Tiara Arta.
"The other athletes who are still competing for the remaining two seats are Horas Manurung and Jeremy Pantaw, as well as Szalza and Hevrilia," Suyudani noted.
Hence, the association will announce the decision as soon as possible, she remarked, adding that Gerry Pantaw, as a senior national athlete, will not be participating in the event due to a leg injury.
The training program in South Korea has proven effective in preparing the athletes since during the SEA Games 2015, the national team was successful in bringing home four gold medals, Suyudani reiterated.
However, instead of setting a higher medal target for the upcoming event, the Indonesian Judo Association is only aiming for two gold medals, as the organizer has removed several weight categories.
"As compared to the previous SEA Games, which had held 12 weight categories, this year's event will only feature six," the coach, who has been a former national athlete, revealed.
