3,000 police to ensure security for ASEAN Summit
PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, Feb 4 (TNA) - Thai Police have prepared security measures for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, with initially at least 3,000 police officers to be deployed to provide protection for the regional meeting.
The 14th ASEAN Summit is scheduled to be held in the seaside resort town of Hua Hin of Prachuap Khiri Kan province during February 27-March 1.
Two top Thai police officials -- Provincial Police Bureau 7 Commissioner Pol. Lt-Gen. Thawil Surachetpong and Commissioner attached to the National Police Office Pol. Lt-Gen. Prayoon Amarit -- jointly chaired a security preparations meeting attended by police officers from Prachuap Khiri Kan and neighbouring provinces, as well as the Border Police, Tourist Police and other security-involved agencies.
Gen. Thawil said eight companies or 1,200 police will be assigned to handle protesters and 300 police will man checkpoints to be set up in Hua Hin and Cha-Am districts.
High-rise buildings in the area would be patrolled and a landing pad for three helicopters would be prepared and on stand-by in Hua Hin in case of an emergency, Gen Thawil said.
The security measures will cover ASEAN leaders, their spouses, ministers and media, he said, adding that all nine hotels where the 10 ASEAN leaders are scheduled to stay would be under strict security measures.
Gen. Thawil said that initially 3,124 policemen would be deployed for the ASEAN Summit. Police will conduct a security rehearsal for the summit later and would report the security plan to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who is expected to visit the site to inspect the security measures first hand.
The meeting is considering closing schools and government offices in Hua Hin from February 24 to prevent traffic congestion during the summit, he said. (TNA)
