Iranian chess master defeats Russian Karpov
Tehran, Feb 3, IRNA - Iranian chess grand master Ehsan Qaem-Maqami overpowered seven-time
World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov 10.5 to 9.5 points here on Monday,
winning dlrs 25,000 prize.
Qaem Maqami played 12 blitz games with Russiangrand master and former
World Champion, winning six of the games and being defeated on five
counts, while finishing equal in a single event.
Eventually the Iranian managed to leave his famous rival behind by 6.5
to 5.5 scores.
The Iranian master played 20 matches on the whole, winning nine,
failing eight and equaling three of the events.
The competitions were held on the anniversary of the victory of
Islamic Revolution in Iran.
The 58-year old Karpov was the undisputed World Champion from 1975 to
1985, repeatedly challenged to regain the title from 1986 to 1990,
then was FIDE World Champion from 1993 to 1999.
The 26-year old Qaem Maqami, who has participated in more than 40
international events, has an Elo rating of 2604 and was named by the
World Chess Federation, FIDE, as the most active and promoting player
in 2004.
The matches were judged by a referee from the Philippines.
