CPJ: 48 Journalists Killed In The World While On Duty This Year

BAGHDAD / NINA / An international organization confirmed that at least 48 journalists have been killed while on duty in 2016, in various countries around the world. According to (Committee To Protect Journalists), which monitors cases of murder of journalists and broadcasters since 1992, in a statement today that, "26 journalists were killed in 2016 because of fighting or exchange of fire while covering conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Afghanistan and Somalia." CPJ added that "18 journalists have been targeted directly during 2016, in reprisal because of their coverage and it is lower death toll among journalists since 2002". CPJ noted that Syria was the deadliest place for journalists for the fifth consecutive year, with 14 journalists killed in 2016. The past year has seen the deaths of 72 journalists, according to the CPJ. It is mentioned that (Committee To Protect Journalists) was founded in 1981, by efforts of a number of international American journalists to face harassment from authoritarian governments. The Committee compiles an annual list of journalists killed while working in all parts of the world. / End
