Nine NRIs, four foreigners get Padma Award
New Delhi, Jan 26 (PTI) Following is the profile of
various NRIs and PIOs selected for Padma Award:
C K Prahlad: A renowned management guru, Coimbatore
Krishnarao Prahlad is a consultant, author and visiting
professor to various universities in India and abroad,
including IIM-A.
Prahlad graduated from Indian Institute of Management in
Ahmedabad and has worked with renowned MNCs.
He has received Pravasi Bharatiya Sammaan award in 2009.
Prahlad authored a number of books on corporate strategy
and management.
He is settled in the United States.
Dr Khalid Hameed: He was born in Lucknow. Hameed is a
Board member of the British Muslim Research Centre and also
the Ethnic Minorities Foundation.
Dr Hameed was awarded the Sternberg Award for 2005 for
his contribution to further Christian - Muslim - Jewish
relations.
He actively participates in interreligious matters and
give lectures on this subject.
He was named British Asian of the year 2007.
Dr Bhakta B Rath: He is a leading scientist and executive
in the materials field.
Dr Rath received a BS degree in physics and mathematics
from Utkal University, an MS in metallurgical engineering from
Michigan Technological University and a PhD from the Illinois
Institute of Technology.
Prof Thomas Kailath: Born on June 7, 1935 in Pune, Prof
Thomas Kailath is a well known electrical engineer and
information theorist.
Professor Kailath has authored several books and is
Hitachi America Professor of Engineering, Emeritus, at
Stanford University.
Devayani Chaymotty: She is a French-born ambassador for
Indian classical dance.
Devayani Chaymotty has made India her home for the past
25 years.
She began learning Bharatnatyam from Amala Devi, a
contemporary of the famed dancer Ram Gopal settled in France,
and later trained under the French dancer Malavika.
Devayani, settled in Delhi for two decades, was
originally named Anne Chaymotty.
Dr Pratapaditya Pal: He has authored close to 50 books
and devoted his life on South Asian and Himalayan Art.
He has done pioneering research on Himalayan art and
helped to give this section of art global recognition through
exhibitions and lecture sessions.
His expertise is Tibet, Nepal and India.
Dr Pal was born in Bangladesh and grew up in Calcutta. He
did his doctorate in fine arts and history from University of
Calcutta.
He completed PhD with special focus on Nepal under the
guidance of historian Nihar Ranjan Roy.
In 1962 he received Commonwealth Scholarship of Cambridge
and got his second PhD.
Prof Geshe Ngawang Samten: He is Director and Vice
Chancellor of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies
in Sarnath, Varanasi.
Geshe Samten earned his Shastri, Acharya and PhD from the
Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies and his Geshe
degree from Ganden Shartse Monastic University.
Dr Panchapakesa Jayaraman: Panchapakesa Jayaraman is a
Vedic priest and the executive director of Bharatiya Vidya
Bhavan, an educational and cultural organization in New York.
Sunny Varkey: A Non-Resident Indian, Sunny Varkey, an NRI
hailing from Kerala, runs a network of top-end schools in the
UAE.
Dr Bavaguthu Raghuram Shetty: He is known as Dr B R
Shetty, first set foot in the UAE in 1973.
As a trained pharmacist from India, he was quick to spot
the opportunity in the field of medicine and established the
NMC Hospital in Abu Dhabi, the first of its kind in the
country, with branches in Dubai and Sharjah following. PTI
