Zabid committee discusses means of protecting the city

HUDEIDA, Jan. 21 (Saba)- The Supreme Committee for Protecting Zabid
Historical City discussed on Wednesday suggestions for protecting
the city and keeping it listed in the World Heritage List.

The meeting, chaired by Minister of Culture Mohammad al-Muflihi and
included governor of Hudeida Ahmad al-Jabali, discussed commitments
made upon cabinet's decision No. 437 for 2007 and challenges facing
the General Authority for Protecting Historical Cities (GAPHC). The
meeting discussed also adopting clear mechanism for raising
awareness of local society for protecting historical cities.

The minister directed constructing bricks' crematories and carrying
out public work projects, which have been assigned YR 280 million,
for the purpose of protecting Zabid Historical City and amending
affected houses.

A number of comments made by GAPHC, General Authority for Lands,
Social Welfare Fund (SWF) and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ)
have been discussed for improving the status of the city and
carrying out reforms for keeping the city listed in World Heritage
List. The SWF and GTZ have committed to provide all capabilities and
assistances for maintaining the city and restoring the civilized
face of it.
