Emissions trading will cut jobs: Nats

The federal government should think again about emissions trading following job losses in the mining industry, the Nationals say.
Nationals leader Warren Truss says emissions trading, due to start in 2010, is a new tax.

"The introduction of (emissions trading) next year, ahead of our major trading
competitors, will only make life more difficult for our mining industry and its
workers," he says.
Mining companies will have to pay billions of dollars in new costs under emissions
trading, which will "undoubtedly" cause more jobs losses, Mr Truss says.
He's called on the government to review the timing of emissions trading.
On Wednesday, BHP Billiton Ltd said it would cut its 101,000-strong global workforce
by about six per cent, with more than half, or about 3,400 of the jobs to be lost
from Australia.
