Indonesia Selected As Universal Postal Union Member
LONDON, UK, Oct 10 (Antara) - Indonesia was selected as a member of the Council of Administration (CA) of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) at the 26th Congress of UPU in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday (Oct 6), according to a press release from the Indonesian Consulate General in Istanbul, received by Antara here on Friday.
Indonesia received the sixth ranking of the ten Group IV countries from South Asia and Oceania regions, consisting of Japan, China, Malaysia, Australia, South Korea, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Iran, and Pakistan.
Indonesian Delegation Chairman Basuki Yusuf Iskandar said Indonesia's election as a member of CA - UPU for 2017-2020 is a reflection of the international confidence on Indonesia's active role played during the development of global postal services.
According to Basuki, Indonesia's membership in the CA - UPU has a strategic significance for the national interest in encouraging the development of connectivity via postal services.
In addition, it also provides an opportunity for Indonesia, in determining the direction and strategic plan for the development of global postal services, in moving towards an integrated service with information and communication technology (ICT).
Indonesia will help the UPU organizational reform to become more efficient, effective, and responsive to the dynamics of the postal world through the application of ICT.
Indonesia's last membership in the CA was in 2012, since, according to UPU rules, a state that has served two terms of membership cannot be re-elected for the next four-year period.
UPU headquarters is located in Bern, Switzerland, and has 192 member countries.
UPU is a UN specialized agency in charge of postal regulations since July 1, 1948, and is a major forum for the member countries and postal service providers, or Designated Postal Operators, worldwide.
The members formulate and establish international postal regulations, which include postal administration, operations/administration of international mail, as well as postal products and services.
