Jets see off Glory in low-key encounter
Reigning A-League champions Newcastle Jets gave some cheer to fans in their last home game of a disappointing 2008/09 season with a 2-1 victory over an under-par Perth Glory.
Goals either side of half-time from Antun Kovacic and Mark Milligan secured the win for the Jets with Scott Bulloch grabbing a consolation for Perth midway through the second half.
Jets boss Gary van Egmond made several changes for the home side on Sunday evening, handing a debut to 16-year-old Ben Kantarovski and giving rare starts to Kaz Patafta and Brodie Mooy.
Jobe Wheelhouse also returned in midfield after a calf injury but star striker Joel Griffiths was sidelined with a hamstring injury.
The Glory were without star striker Eugene Dadi, who has started his five-month loan deal with Swiss side FC Vaduz, and pacy midfielder Nikita Rukavytsa who is on trial in Holland with FC Twente.
The absence of the attackers was a huge hindrance for the visitors who failed to muster a worthwhile scoring effort in a sterile opening 45 minutes that failed to rouse a small crowd of just 6,665.
The deadlock was broken on the stroke of half-time when defender Kovacic rose unmarked to head powerfully past Velaphi.
Ten minutes into the second half the Jets doubled their lead when stand-in skipper Matt Thompson was upended just inside the box by David Tarka and Socceroos defender Mark Milligan lashed home the penalty.
The visitors scored with their first genuine attack of the game through Scott Bulloch.
The goal was created by former Ajax and Holland winger Viktor Sikora who showed a clean pair of heels to Ahmed Elrich and crossed into the box for Bulloch to sidefoot past the helpless Ante Covic.
The hosts pushed hard late but were unable to add to their tally, although supporters finally had something to cheer before their last game of the season at Sydney FC next Sunday.
