WA crews continue bushfire containment

Firefighters have contained bushfires that ravaged large tracts of land north and
south of Perth and threatened a small town.
The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) said fire crews contained a
fire between Bridgetown and Greenbushes on Sunday morning.
Three houses were lost when the fire swept through 5,900 hectares of bushland and
pasture in between the two towns, in the state's south-west.
The fire threatened Bridgetown but a wind change favoured firefighters and saved the
town from the fire risk.
DEC fire crews worked on Sunday to consolidate containment lines around the 50km
fire perimeter and mopped up the fire.
Cooler weather conditions for the next three days would be welcomed by fire crews
and a thunderstorm risk on Sunday proved unwarranted.
An 8,000 hectare bushfire in the Yanchep National Park, north of the city, was
contained late on Saturday but fire crews were still working to bring the blaze
fully under control, Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) spokesman Allen
Gale said on Sunday.
The Yanchep fire broke out on Friday and destroyed power poles and lines before
being contained within a 50km perimeter.
Mr Gale said road closures in the area remained in place on Sunday.
Department of Environment and Conservation spokesman Nigel Higgs said damage to a
pine plantation burnt in the blaze would be assessed by the Forest Products
Commission next week.
Mr Higgs described the burnt out area as "a moonscape".
