Miliband meets Kayani, discusses regional security situation

Islamabad, Jan 17 (PTI) The regional security situation
after the Mumbai attacks figured Saturday during a meeting
between Pakistan army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and visiting
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, who hoped New Delhi
and Islamabad would cooperate to defuse tensions.

Miliband, who arrived here Friday from India, met Gen
Kayani Saturday morning before ending his two-day visit to
Pakistan.

Quoting military sources, TV channels reported that
Miliband and Kayani discussed bilateral security cooperation,
the war on terror, operations against militants in Pakistan's
tribal areas as well as security along the Afghan border.

They also discussed the regional security situation in
the wake of the Mumbai attacks during their hour-long meeting,
the reports said.

Kayani reportedly said Pakistan was committed to fighting
militancy and terrorism and would never allow its soil to be
used for terrorist activities.

Miliband hoped India and Pakistan would cooperate to
defuse regional tensions, the military sources said. PTI RHL
