46 provinces declared emergency areas in cold spell

CHIANG MAI, Jan 16 (TNA) -The disaster prevention and mitigation department has declared 46 provinces in the upper part of the country emergency areas affected by the current cold spell. The emergency areas were in the north, the northeast, the east and central regions.

The department set up a special center in the regions to handle the unusual cold weather, and to work with its local offices to set up centers to help residents in all areas affected by the cold spell.

Any province in which the temperature dropped below 15 degrees Celcius for three consecutive days could seek an emergency budget of not over one million baht from the government to supply warm clothing for local residents.

A monkey meanwhile died from exposure to the cold weather in a national park in the eastern province of Amnat Charoen. More than 4,000 monkeys were suffering from lack of food, with some losing appetite.

In Chiang Mai, the temperature on Thailand’s highest peak of Doi Inthanon dropped to minus three degrees Celsius on Friday. Officials at Chiang Mai zoo took animals from their shelters to warm up in the sunlight, while a four month old little pig, a super star among local children, wore clothes and exercised to keep in good health.
