PRESIDENT ORDERS COMPREHENSIVE PROBE INTO SHIPWRECK IN MAJENE WATERS
Jakarta, Jan 14 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called for an overall investigation into the sinking of the KM Teratai Prima in Majene waters in order to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The president addressed the call to Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal during an inspection of the Jakarta city government's preparations to handle floods at the Jakarta Public Works office here on Wednesday.
On the occasion , the transportation minister was also asked to report on the latest developments in the shipwreck and on efforts to investigate the accident which happened in waters off the coast of Majene in West Sulawesi province.
"Continue the investigation in a comprehensive way, and do not mellow because we have to protect the people," the president said after listening to the minister's report.
The president also said a check shold be made on the vessel's safety equipment immediately without waiting for the results of an investigation by the National Committee for Transportation Safety (KNKT).
"You should not wait for the KNKT. You should issue an order to check the Teratai Prina;s safety equipment, and then forbid all vessels lacking complete safety equipment from leaving ports," the president said.
The minister later said he would soon issue an announcement for port authorities to pay close attention to early warnings on weather and wave conditions from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The KM Teratai Prima which carried about 250 passengers and a 17-man crew capsized and sank in the waters of Baturoro, Majene district, due to huge waves and a storm when it was sailing from Parepare port in South Sulawesi to Balikpapan in East Kalimantan, early Sunday.
The vessel left Parpare port at 4 pm on Saturday but later met the accident due to huge waves.
