Thai PM to attend World Economic Forum in Davos

BANGKOK, Jan 14 (TNA) - In an attempt to boost foreign investor confidence and the tourism industry in Thailand which has been shaken by political turbulence for several years, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Wednesday he would attend the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, late this month.

Mr. Abhisit, who was royally appointed prime minister December 17, told envoys and senior officials of international organisations from 93 countries during a meeting earlier in the day that he would apply himself to bring reconciliation and further advance Thailand's well-being during his administration.

Thailand's economy would be boosted through short- and long-term plans, he said, adding that he would attend the World Economic Forum to be held in Davos from January 28 through February 1.

Over 2,500 participants from the business, political and cultural communities will address the Forum's annual meeting theme "Forum 2009: Shaping the Post-Crisis World".

There is a unique opportunity at the beginning of 2009 for leaders from industry, government and civil society to shape this transformation at an early stage for the benefit of all stakeholders. The objective of Forum 2009 is to catalyse a holistic and systematic approach to improve the state of the world in a manner that integrates all stakeholders of global society.

Meanwhile, Tharit Charungvat, director-general of Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry's Information Department, said the ministry would join with four other state agencies -- the commerce and finance ministries, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Board of Investment – in preparing presentations to boost the image of Thailand abroad, particularly in the major markets of China, Japan, Russia and the United Arab Emirates.

Roadshows abroad as well as inviting public relations officials overseas to visit Thailand will be carried out under the plan which has received a government budget amounting to Bt325 million, Mr. Tharit said.

Also under the plan, Thai embassies and consulates have been instructed by the ministry to report on how other countries view Thailand so that it could be prepared urgently, he said. (TNA)
