UAE to continue delivery of urgent aid to Palestinians: Hamdan bin Zayed
Abu Dhabi, Jan 14, 2009 (WAM) - The UAE will continue the delivery of urgent aid to the distressed Palestinian people in coordination with regional and international aid agencies, said HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Foreign Aid Coordination Office.
"The UAE has been at the forefront of countries working tirelessly to ameliorate the suffering of the Palestinian people. This effort will continue unabated as directed by President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and as overseen by HH Gen. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces", said Sheikh Hamdan.
Speaking to delegates of the donor agencies and countries conference which concluded yesterday in Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Hamdan said the UAE was duty bound to help its Palestinian brethren as they face the worst humanitarian conditions, namely inhumane blockade, destruction of lives and properties, and appalling living conditions.
Sheikh Hamdan expressed appreciation to the tremendous response of philanthropists in the UAE, both UAE nationals and resident expatriates, who were able to raise Dh600 million and also pledged to build 1300 houses and renovate schools, hospitals and mosques destroyed by the Israeli troops.
Sheikh Hamdan also told the delegates that he had a telephone conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud, who briefed him on the latest developments on the grounds in addition to efforts being made to bring about a ceasefire.
During the meeting, Sheikh Hamdan expressed his deep concern about the humanitarian conditions in Gaza.
"What is happening now in Gaza is extremely painful. It doesn't serve the best interest of our Palestinian brethren. Therefore, it is imperative for all Palestinians to unify their ranks as they face this terrible tragedy", he said.
Sheikh Haman added: "Political manoeuvres should have limitations, especially when humanitarian issues and rights of people are concerned. What is happening now in Gaza is a humanitarian tragedy and we should work to stop it".
The work of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA), said Sheikh Hamdan, is an expression of solidarity and commitment.
"We hope this move will inspire others to follow suit", he concluded.
