Education Minister: Employing modern technology in education main Priority

Dubai, Jan 14, 2009 (WAM) - H.E. Dr. Hanif Hassan, UAE Minister of Education, assured that employing modern information technology in the curriculums has become a strategic solution for achieving exquisite learning outcomes and attaining development and progress of the nation.

The Ministry of Education is very keen on providing information technology infrastructure that relays on modern techniques through all educational levels as well as employing them in the educational process to allow schools utilize them in management and work achievement. He also lauded the support of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, UAE Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and Their Highnesses Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates for the education field.

This was announced by the Minister of Education during his participation in the 6th Learning and Technology Forum held in London for three days and heading an educational delegation. His Excellency the Minister of Education explained that the ministry has announced lots of initiatives that embody information technology in the educational and administrative field referring to the ministry's e-portal that was launched and aims for achieving communication between schools, parents and educators in addition to the agreement which was lately signed by H.E. Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education '&' Scientific Research to establish an information technology and evaluation centre and connect all UAE schools and evaluate schools' technological infrastructure through the Centre of Excellence for Applied Research '&' Training "CERT" under the umbrella of the Higher Colleges of Technology.

Dr. Hanif Hassan addressed the schools' directors to benefit from the experiences of the delegations and submitted case studies especially Britain's experiences in education technology reform. He also encouraged them to assist all their colleagues in the education field to benefit from this important conference and apply modern curriculums in order to create a modern educational environment and assist the students to transit into university life smoothly and easily.

Furthermore, the conference attracted more than 500 participants from 60 countries all over the world and encompassed three themes: leadership, skills and education workforce for the 21st century. The forum represents a global platform for information exchange among key policy makers and practitioners whose primary areas of focus involve the design of policy and implementation of programs to ensure effective application of technology within education. It also provides all participants the opportunities to fully engage in dialogue providing a unique insight into the objectives of decision makers in defining future policy priorities in the application of technological solutions for learning. The Forum also showcases prime examples of best practice across the globe. It is organized by the Department for Children, Schools and families "DCSF" and Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills "DIUS" and British Educational Suppliers Association "BESA" in cooperation with the industrial partners: Intel, Cisco and Microsoft.

Opened by a welcome address of Respected Honourable Jim Knigh- MP Minister of State for Schools and Learners, the forum included various seminars and workshops that were presented by experts in the technological field.

Ray Barker, Director of BESA spoke about the English educational system while Richard De Lorenzo-a leader in education reform and organization restructuring gave a plenary session about school reform restructuring. The ministerial program visit included their attendance to various seminars about leadership, educational skills and needs of the labour market. Ministers from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Japan and Czech Republic presented keynote addresses about their educational overviews and technological experiences in their respective countries. Advisors from the World Bank, UNESCO and OECD also gave workshops about national policies and programs for education reform in schools.

Moreover, the UAE delegation participated in three workshops that discussed the efforts of the USA in practical issues related to 21st assessments: the definition of 21st century skills, innovative classroom practices that support 21st century skills, methodologies for designing and analyzing 21st century assessments, and the use of technology to deliver such assessments that was presented by Dr. Robert B. Kozma, Kozmalone Consulting, USA. Jonathan Dale and Sue Kelliher, from the National College for School Leadership- and others, gave a presentation about leadership in schools and the means of which school leaders might be developed to be most effective. The third workshop discussed technology and learning in the workplace.

The UAE educational delegation made various field trips to the schools where they got acquainted with the British experienced in education reform. Mr. Abdul Aziz Al Yas, Director of Mohammad Al Fateh School in Sharjah Education Zone, said: "We made a tour in the library and classrooms of Quintin Kynstone Secondary School and learnt about the new educational experiences they use in encouraging students to free reading by selecting various books, giving a presentation to their colleagues about what they learnt and experienced and attending an examination about this book.

Heyam Mohammad Aamer, Director of Um Emmara Secondary School in Khorfakkan, expressed her admiration with Parkiment Hill Secondary School that utilizes technology in extra-curricular and cultural activities and providing each student with a laptop; she also hoped that the UAE can apply such an experience in public schools; such experiences will also benefit them in the CEPA exams.

Fatma Jaber, Director of Al Nakheel Primary School in Ras Al Khaimah, said: "We had an excellent experience in 7 Miles Primary School; this great school managed to turn its old building into an attractive educational environment. The building has very modern facilities and equipments. It is also equipped with touch screens and modern technologies. The director of the school has direct communications with international universities and employs well experienced teachers through these universities. Students are also involved in several social, scientific and cultural activities; they also give great concerns to special needs students; the school signed cooperation agreements with international universities; I certainly hope that we can benefit from their experience in the UAE as well".
