Gov't to spend 2.8 tln won on media convergence

By Kim Young-gyo
SEOUL, Jan. 13 (Yonhap) -- The government will spend 2.8 trillion won (US$ 2.06
billion) over the next five years to boost the convergence of the broadcast and
telecommunications sectors, the telecommunications regulator said Tuesday.

The money will be used for six major research and development (R&D) projects,
including advanced IPTV (Internet protocol television) and next-generation
networking technologies, the Korea Communications Commission said.
The increased government spending is expected to increase the country's exports
of related products to US$220 billion in 2018 and create an additional 150,000
jobs until that year, it said.
The commission also said it has set a goal of transforming the nation's media
content industry into one of the world's top five by 2012, and the software
sector by 2018.
