S. Korea's power consumption hits new high for winter
SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's electricity consumption surged to a
record winter high on Monday as the country was gripped by sub-zero cold weather,
the Korea Power Exchange (KPX) said.
The exchange said electricity demand reached 62.65 million kilowatts at noon as
temperatures across most of the country stayed below freezing. The figure
represented the highest level reached during the cold months, surpassing the
previous record of 60.95 million kilowatts tallied for Jan. 17, 2008.
It also said that the total is just short of the all-time record of 62.79 million
kilowatts reached on July 15 last year under heavy air conditioner usage.
At present, KPX expects there will be no shortfall in power production, although
power companies will carefully monitor demand as the weather is expected to
remain cold, it said.
