Thai cabinet to discuss Bt120 billion supplementary budget allocations

BANGKOK, Jan 12 (TNA) - Making the most speedy and effective use of the planned Bt120 billion supplementary budget is on the Cabinet agenda for Tuesday as the Abhisit government sets to work to stimulate the economy, according to Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij.

The Bt120 billion supplementary budget, scheduled to be released in March, will assist sectors hard-hit by the ongoing economic slump in Thailand and will not be used to raise the capital of state-run financial institutions as funds from other sources will instead be used in helping them, Mr. Korn said.

Government budget for several programmes, especially long-deferred funds for the Local Administrative Organisation, will be reviewed and discussed at a meeting to be presided over by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva later this week.

Looking more realistically at state enterprises is one aspect of the new government's policy. Economic ministers will meet Wednesday, and each ministry overseeing state enterprises has been asked to break down and assess the investment, spending patterns and output of the enterprises to take a more pragmatic look at their functioning, Mr. Korn said.

The action is necessary because as much as Bt600 billion in the budget allocations for government agencies and state enterprises has been deferred, he said.

Mr. Korn said he would propose tax measures to give a reprieve to help Thailand's battered business sectors.

State-run financial institutions will be asked to extend hundreds of billions of baht in loans to help operators of small and medium-sized enterprises with annual revenue of between Bt200-300 million so that they could have enough cashflow to operate their businesses, he said. (TNA)
