Emergency int'l meeting for Gaza to kicks off today in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, Jan 12, 2009 (WAM) - An emergency meeting of donating countries and international relief and humanitarian organisations will be held today in Abu Dhabi to discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza Strip and determine the needs and priorities to help out Palestinians in Gaza as well as to make clear the barriers to delivering relief dispatches to Gaza.
The meeting will be held upon a call from H.H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister who is also Chairman of Red Crescent Authority (RCA) and Chairman of the Foreign Aid Coordination Committee. The meeting will be held at InterContinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi and will be chaired by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohammed Anwar Gargash.
Abdul Haq Amiri is the Head of the regional office of UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Dubai said the meeting will provide donors with an opportunity to get a clearer picture of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the prioritized needs of Palestinians as well as the best and fastest ways to channel humanitarian relief aid to Gazans.
He stressed that the United Nations is doing its best to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.
On his part, The United Nations' special representative for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) Peter Ford said Palestinians pay the price for impeding the delivery of humanitarian aid. At the same time, we see massive destruction and killing. Ford called on the international community to commit itself to joint action to put an end to violence and deliver emergency aid to people.
"Emergency and reconstruction needs will be evident upon a ceasefire. We can (then) make an evaluation", he remarked.
Meanwhile in Gaza, 850 Palestinian were martyred by the continued Israeli aggression which also injured 3350 others most of which are women and children.
The uninterrupted Israeli military operation in Gaza has also displaced 21000 Palestinians who sought shelter at UNRWA schools. This is the largest massive displacement of Palestinians since the year 1967.
