Gargash: UAE spared no effort to support the Palestine issue

Abu Dhabi, Jan 12, 2009 (WAM) - Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash asserted that UAE did spare no effort to support the Palestine issue and the people of Palestine on all political, material, humanitarian and moral fronts. The minister also said that UAE has always stood first in extending the hand of help to the people of Palestine in times of trial.
Gargash was making a statement to mark the meeting of donor countries, national and international humanitarian and charity organisations in Abu Dhabi today.
The urgent meeting is called by UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Red Crescent Authority (RCA) HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to determine needs of the Palestinian people. The meeting will also decide on how to deliver them effectively.
Sheikh Hamdan has made an appeal to the donor countries and international organisations to live up to their responsibilities by helping the Palestinians in Gaza.
Gargash said that UAE and its people are doing everything needed to drum up the international support for alleviating the sufferings of the Palestinian people in Gaza brought about by the Israeli aggression.
This ruthless attack has took the lives of many innocent people including several children, women and old men, and it is clear to everyone that what is going on in Gaza is taking us far away from the peace process in the Middle East, the minister added.
The minister continued: 'Based on the faith of UAE in the need for adopting practical and constructive plans, which will help and support the Palestinian resistance and alleviate the sufferings of our brothers and our children in Gaza, the Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of RCA and Chairman of the Coordinating office of UAE's Foreign Assistance HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan made a noble initiative by calling an urgent meeting of the donor countries, Emirati and international humanitarian and charity organisations in Abu Dhabi'.
The minister said that the meeting will assess the humanitarian situation in Gaza and determine the needs and priorities for helping the Palestinian people affected by the Israeli aggression. The meeting will also examine the impediments obstructing the delivery of relief supplies and decide on ways for effective humanitarian access to Gaza, Gargash added.
The main objective of this coordinative effort is to give the relief operations an international character bringing them under the care of the United Nations so as to ensure protection for those who deliver the assistance. It will also guarantee their entry into the ground and facilitate coordination with UNRWA and other international agencies to carry out the relief operations, Gargash noted.
He added: 'Without doubt, by way of supporting this initiative and the meeting, the Foreign Ministry is complementing its political work in UAE's endeavour to support the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights'.
