Abu Dhabi, Jan 12, 2009 (WAM) - The Ministerial Council for Services has called for considering 2009 an "anti-diabetes year", after Ministry of Health reports confirmed that 24 percent of the UAE nationals are diabetics.
In its meeting yesterday, chaired by H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs, the Council approved a proposed 10-year national strategy for primary and secondary prevention against diabetes which entails improvement of facilities, services and research aimed at stemming diabetes prevalence.
The council called for efforts to spread public awareness and for encouraging regular check-up practices to curb mushrooming incidence of Type 1 diabetes. The Council members reviewed findings of the household income/expenditure survey for 2007-08, as well as measures taken to impalement cabinet resolution number 20 on regulating quarries operations. Also discussed were closing accounts for several higher education institutions.
