Dubai Customs launches anti-smuggling mobile laboratory

Dubai, Jan 12, 2009 (WAM) - Dubai Customs has launched a mobile laboratory, the first of its kind in the UAE, for detecting drugs, explosives, chemical substances and radioactive materials that might be smuggled into the country.
The laboratory is equipped with the latest devices and equipment for detecting different kinds of smuggled items including drugs, explosives, and hidden spaces for storing illegal goods. State of the art equipment also includes a telescope for viewing narrow places, remote and close detection device and external monitoring camera.
The laboratory is directly linked to Dubai Customs operations room where the computer system receives instant reports and results from the onboard laboratory computer. So far the laboratory has been effectively used in detecting attempted drug smuggling at Dubai Cargo Village and the discovery of another attempt to smuggle a shipment of fireworks at Jebel Ali Port.
Ahmed Butti Ahmed, Director General of Dubai Customs underlined the potential benefits of such a laboratory in terms of accelerating site inspection for detecting smuggled or suspected items making Dubai Customs rapid and efficient in maintaining Dubai's borders and security and safeguarding legitimate trade in the country.
Butti affirmed that "the benefit of such a laboratory is not restricted to Dubai Customs only but also to other government departments and organisations in the country by seeking assistance when needed. This has effectively taken place recently when Dubai Police and Borders Guard sought assistance in connection with some operations of their own." Worth mentioning, Dubai Customs is currently considering the establishment of another mobile laboratory in support of the existing one following the great success being achieved in combating smuggling and protecting the country's borders.
