LPG-powered vehicles increase sharply in 2008

SEOUL, Jan. 10 (Yonhap) -- The number of vehicles powered by liquefied petroleum
gas (LPG) in South Korea increased sharply last year largely as price-conscious
drivers snapped them up amid higher gasoline prices, the transportation ministry
said Saturday.

According to the ministry, a total of 2.32 million LPG-powered vehicles were
registered at the end of December, up 6.14 percent from a year ago.
The popularity of gasoline and diesel-fueled vehicles fell last year in favor of
LPG-powered cars as soaring fuel prices pressed drivers to seek alternatives to
traditionally fueled vehicles, it said.
The portion of LPG-powered vehicles increased 13.89 percent at the end of last
year, up from 13.3 percent and 12.9 percent in 2007 and 2006, respectively,
according to the ministry.
