Biden asks India, Pak to work together on Mumbai terror probe

Rezaul H Laskar

Islamabad, Jan 9 (PTI) Seeking to defuse tensions in the sub-continent in the wake of the Mumbai attacks, US Vice President-elect Joseph Biden Friday said India and Pakistan should work together to investigate the terror strikes and bring the perpetrators to justice.

During a meeting here with President Asif Ali Zardari,
Biden said the tensions between India and Pakistan need to be
defused through talks for peace in the region.

There was no official word on the meeting though TV news
channels quoted Biden as saying that India and Pakistan need
to work together to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai
terror attacks to justice.

Zardari told Biden that Pakistan is seriously pursuing
its own probe into the Mumbai attacks. Pakistan's stand on the
incident is clear and no state institutions were involved in
the attacks, he said.

Once Pakistan completes its own investigation into the
Mumbai attacks, it will share information with India, Zardari
said. However, TV channels reported that Zardari described the
tone of recent statements by Indian leaders as disappointing.

Reiterating Pakistan's commitment to the war on terror,
Zardari said defeat is not an option for the country. He also
hoped that the drone attacks in Pakistan's tribal areas would
stop with the change in the US administration.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was present during
Zardari's meeting with Biden.

Biden, who is in Pakistan on a day-long visit, also met
powerful army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani at the General
Headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi to discuss
cooperation in the war against terror and the regional
security situation.

Kayani briefed Biden about military operations in the
tribal areas and said the fight against militancy will
continue till it is "completely uprooted", TV channels quoted
military sources as saying.

On his arrival in Islamabad, Biden was received by
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

Zardari conferred one of Pakistan's highest civilian
honours, the Hilal-i-Pakistan, on Biden in recognition of his
services for the country. PTI RHL
