Yonhap News correspondent posthumously gets int'l award
SEOUL, Jan. 9 (Yonhap) -- A correspondent of Yonhap News Agency posthumously
received an international news reporting award from a group of senior South
Korean journalists on Friday.
The Seoul-based Kwanhun Club conferred the award on Cho Gye-chang, a
correspondent who was based in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang, in
recognition of two outstanding reports, including a scoop on North Korea's new
constitution.
Cho was killed in a car accident on Dec. 2 while returning from a coverage trip
in Yanji, China's Jilin Province. He became South Korea's first correspondent
posted to the Chinese city in June 2006 after entering Yonhap in 1998.
Cho's widow, Kim Min-jung, accepted the International News Report Award in Memory
of Reporter Choi Byung-woo on behalf of her husband.
The award, given annually since 1989, honors journalists who excel in
international news reporting in the spirit of Choi, who perished while covering a
China-Taiwan conflict on Kinmen Island in 1958.
