RCA to rush relief to Gaza through Rafah
Abu Dhabi, Jan 8, 2009 (WAM) - The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) will run a land relief convoy on Friday from Cairo to Gaza through Rafah Border Crossing as part of its second phase of a massive relief campaign to deliver urgent essential humanitarian needs from food, medicines and clothing to heating sets to affected population in Gaza Strip.
Ordered by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and RCA Chairman, the humanitarian programme will be carried out in coordination with the UAE Embassy in Cairo and UNRWA. The UAE Embassy in Cairo is supervising the purchase of relief materials from the local market.
RCA Board Chairman Dr. Ali bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi said :''The RCA is closely monitoring its relief operations in Gaza and receiving daily reports so as to cope with the latest developments and coordinate stances and movement with its counterparts in Gaza.
''Sheikh Hamdan is being updated daily on the RCA's field operations and directed the RCA to deliver the best and prompt services so as to ease suffering of Gazans,'' he added.
"We are working on different fronts to ensure delivery of assistance to the affected population as quickly as possible so as lives can be saved and hardship be lifted. We have opted to dispatch relief through Rafah Crossing which we expected to see smooth traffic of humanitarian assistance,'' Al Ka'abi said.
Over the past few days, he said the RCA had provided badly needed consignment of medical supplies and first aid kits to a number of hospitals in Gaza ''Our prime concern and focus is to save life and take care of innocent patients and underprivileged people,'' he indicated.
He added that food parcels had been delivered to hungry Gazans who have been trapped in their houses.
''Relief operations are progressing as planned in coordination with UNRWA,'' he explained.
''We are working with the UNICEF to secure basic needs of women and children, the most hit segments by the current events. Children in particular will get fortified meals and milk.
''We will forge ahead with our humanitarian efforts to improve the living conditions of Gazans,'' he affirmed.
